The sense of coherence and sense of satisfaction with life in patients hospitalized in Polish and Irish surgical departments

BACKGROUND The concept of the sense coherence (SOC) - global orientation life, created by Aaron Antonovsky is increasingly popular. This study within field health psychology examines situation patients awaiting surgery in Poland and Ireland. OBJECTIVES To investigate relationship between strength SOC its components (comprehensibility, manageability meaningfulness) level satisfaction with life (SWL) hospitalized surgical departments hospitals MATERIAL AND METHODS research was conducted a group 60 patients, including 30 tools utilized were Sense Coherence Questionnaire for Adults SOC-29 Satisfaction Life Scale (SWLS). Polish versions both questionnaires also used. RESULTS We obtained following results:- comprehensibility: undergoing Poland, mean (M) = 46.3, standard deviation (SD) 9.8, minimum value (Min) 28, maximum (Max) 63; Irish M 50.8, SD 9.2,Min 33, Max 71;- manageability: 49.7, 5.07, Min 37, 58; 49.3 6.39, 38, 63;- meaningfulness: 45.5, 4.24, 54; 44.9 5.74, 34, 56. CONCLUSIONS results confirmed assumption that general correlates SWL. However, they did not confirm hypothesis differences patients' SOC, their SWL depend on country hospitalization.
